Here’s another set of highlights from Leeds’ new record shop and close ally to Wire, Tribe Records.

Selections are by Alex Theodossiadis and Mike Greenwell.

(Keep your eyes peeled for the next Tribe Records All Stars party at Wire. Announcement coming soon.)

Binh – ThisThat (Time Passages)

ALEX: Binh has been making himself known as an extremely functional club DJ and producer in recent times. With a no nonsense attitude to selection his sets are full of 90s bleep, old school European techno and rough and ready techno tracks. This has been mirrored in his Time Passages label, which has been churning out dancefloor bombs from the likes of Spacetravel and Onur Özer. Binh’s ThisThat EP takes a step away from the peak time techno and electro of the last few releases on Time Passages and moves towards early evening or after hours territory. The title track ‘ThisThat’ is about as upbeat as Binh gets these days with a warm low end and floaty pads hovering in the back, whilst my pick of the bunch – ‘Chazledon’, invokes early morning sessions at CDV. It powers through relentlessly with raw drum programming and a bopping bassline that work extremely well in tandem.

DJ Sotofett & LNS – Jugando Con Fuego (Wania)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwPEvdQmOxQ

ALEX: For Sotofett’s latest offering on his Wania imprint he’s teamed up with Canadian newcomer LNS who first came into the spotlight following a hotly tipped mini LP on 1080p. Her dreamy ambient style is a perfect match for Sotofett’s own hazy take on house and techno, and together on ‘Jugando Con Fuego’ they have delivered 4 excellent cuts of the same track. The ‘club mix’ is a rolling 8 minute journey, starting ambient before dipping into sun washed piano chords and the classic Sotofett percussion shuffle. The other versions are shorter with the ‘sunrise mix’ focussing on the piano and pan pipes, the ‘cosmix’ showcasing the shimmering arpeggiated synths, whilst the ‘percussion mix’ does exactly what it says on the tin.

Tandoori ‎– World Tour 1 (Twin Cities)

ALEX: This is the debut release on Twin Cities, a party turned label coming out of Copenhagen. After a few years running successful parties across clubs such as about:blank and OHM in Berlin, they have decided to invest their time in a label with the debut release coming from Kaspar Marott aka Tandoori. Both cuts are drum work tracks of the highest order, with mind bending polyrhythms that will no doubt plague DJs and prove difficult for long blends. ‘Ravn’ uses an unconventional time signature to give a hypnotic sense of groove over the underlying 4 to the floor beat, whilst ‘Ny Sommer’ is a bit more conventional, relying on warped analogue effects to add texture. It also sounds great at 33rpm! A wicked DJ tool all round.

Walton – Beyond (Hyperdub)

MIKE: This release from 2013 still sounds fresh and this welcome reissue shows this producer’s talents that developed in Manchester. There’s grime and bass infused tracks that nestle aptly alongside Chez Damier style garage. It’s a useful LP for DJs or a lovely late night burner for home listening. From this month, Tribe is starting to further expand the range in store of quality UK-styles and futuristic dub influenced club music. Amara Toure – Amara 1973-1980 (Analog Africa)

MIKE: This fully licensed compilation draws together some of the masterpieces that this Guinean singer produced during a fertile seven year period. This is Afro-Cuban music of extraordinary depth, African percussion and sublime horns reign throughout these soulful and languid compositions. Touré’s 30 year-long career began in the late 1950s in Dakar as part of the Senegalese collective Le Star Band de Dakar. Toure later went on to form his own band Black and White based in Cameroon, where he further refined his unique take on Cuban music, fusing West African mandingue sounds and Latin instrumentation. Great artwork too
